Emanuel Lasker vs David Janowski
Lasker - Janowski World Championship Match (1910), Berlin GER, rd 11, Dec-08
King's Gambit: Declined. Classical Variation General (C30) 1-0
An interesting game played in the present championship match of the Franklin Chess Club and also for the championship of Philadelphia and the Childs Cup.
C.S. Martinez (white) vs. D. Stuart (black)
Four Knights Game: Double Spanish
(a) An old-time form of attack. This move was considered the best continuation until the match of Steinitz vs. Zukertort, when Steinitz demonstrated that Black can now obtain at least an even game by NxN, followed by P-K5, the main variation being as follows: 6. N-Q5 NxN; 7. PxN P-K5; 8. PxN PxN; 9. QxP QPxP; 10. B-Q3 B-Q3, etc.
(b) We consider this defense inferior to the one played as above by Steinitz.
(c) The late J.P. Morgan, formerly a member of the Franklin Chess Club, who gave special study to this opening, always stated that there was only one point to be considered, viz., planting a pawn at Q, and that the first player who could do so successfully obtained the better game.
(d) Ingenious, but questionable as to its soundness.
(e) Apparently White played this move without due consideration.
