William Lombardy Surprises Strong Field
William Lombardy, N.Y., although rated lower than many of those competing in the Log Cabin Chess Club Invitation Masters tourney, came through to win with a 7-2 point score. The former world junior champion was undefeated. Next came Paul Benko, 6½-2½, and Larry Evans, 6-3, both also without loss. Top prizes were $1,200, $1,000 and $500, donated by E. Forry Laucks, president and founder of the club. The event was held in celebration of the club's Silver Anniversary. Other scores: A.B. Bisguier and R. Byrne, 5-4 each; C. Kalme, 4½-4½; W. Shipman, 4-5; J. Cross, 3-6; E. Mednis and J. Sherwin, 2-7 each.
