West Virginia's Allen DuVall is a tough chess nut to crack, a fact to which both former Kentucky Champion Jack Moyse and I can attest. But he does have his bad days (as who doesn't?) and here we find him paying the penalty of faulty development.

Chess Play-By-Mail Tournament Is Now Open
By MERRILL DOWDEN
An opportunity to improve the quality of your chess game through correspondence play again presents itself. I have received a communique from Charles C. Johnson, director of the North American Correspondence Chess League, advising that sections for the fall and winter tournaments are now being formed. There will be sections for players in every category, so no matter whether you're beginner or master, the league will be able to match you against the kind of opposition you need to develop your game and at the same time give you a fair chance for a prize. Headquarters of the league are at 820 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge 39, Mass.
Jackie Mayer, the Kentucky junior champion who performed so brilliantly in the recent U. S. Open tournament at Omaha, has scored a decisive 3-1 victory over Bob Baker, Berkeley, Cal., high-school titlist. Jackie won the first joust, a Nimzo-Indian, in 31 moves, and the second, a Queen's Gambit Declined, in 58. He then dropped a Queen's Indian in 56 moves, but rallied to capture the final game, a Q.G.D., in 28.
Young Mayer, incidentally, is now enrolled as a freshman at Purdue University.
Edwin Cohen, whose extraordinary chess accomplishments this year included winning The Courier - Journal Showalter Trophy, symbolic of the State championship, and a victory over Grandmaster Isaac Kashdan of New York, has entered the University of Michigan, where he will study law. He attended the University of Louisville last year.
