Fischer Leads In U.S. Championship
Bobby Fischer, after a slow start in the tournament for the United States Chess Championship, has gained ground steadily and after eight rounds is well in the lead with a score of 6½-1½, according to a report from the New York Times.
The 16-year-old defending titleholder has won five games and drawn three with no losses to mar his record. Only once was Fischer in trouble, against Robert Byrne of Indianapolis. This game ended in a draw after moves were repeated. Others who have held Fischer even are James T. Sherwin and Raymond Weinstein.
Samuel Reshevsky of Spring Valley, N.Y. former U.S. champion who led in the early stages, lost in the fourth round to Herbert Seidman of Brooklyn, who played a brilliant attacking game to score the point.
