Standard Oil Defeats Van Nuys In Last Match
The six-man team representing the Standard Oil Co. won the Class II team championship of the Southern California Chess League, defeating the Van Nuys Chess Club by 3½-2½ in the final play-off match.
Standard Oil won all 10 matches for a clean sweep in the eastern division. The only team which was close to the leader was the City Terrace Chess Club, which took second place with a 9-1 match score. The Pasadena Chess Club and the Lincoln Park Chess and Checker Club of Long Beach tied for third with 7-3.
Van Nuys took top position in the western division with 7½-1½. The two teams representing the Santa Monica Bay Chess Club tied for second, each scoring 7-2. Tied for fourth were the second team of Van Nuys and the Herman Steiner Chess Club, with scores of 4½-4½.

After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

The photograph of Bobby Fischer (above) from the March 02, 1956 The Tampa Times was discovered by Sharon Mooney (Bobby Fischer Newspaper Archive editor) on February 01, 2018 while gathering research materials for this ongoing newspaper archive project. Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
