PROBLEM DEPARTMENT
A Problem by a chess master is a rare article and there are very few problems bearing the names of master players extant. Dr. Lasker, however, has composed quite a number of problems and end-games. Walter Penn Shipley, in the “Philadelphia Inquirer,” says: “Dr. Lasker does not pose as a problem expert, nevertheless in all his problems that we have seen there are ideas which show the master mind.” The problem below confirms Mr. Shipley's statements, in our judgment, and is probably the best two-move study ever composed by the World's champion. Solutions should be sent to the chess editor not later than April 18.
