L. A. Times Problem No. 6. Composed for the Los Angeles Times by H. H., dedicated to A. K. Nelson, Vallejo, Cal.
White to play and draw.
FEN 4qbk1/2P3p1/2pp1pP1/2p1pP2/7R/5PKB/4N2P/8 w - - 0 1
Solution: N-B4;
We have published this End Game because it had an interesting point which not one of our ladderites had discovered! Many of them found the first move which in problems like the two movers are all right, but in End Games, unless clear, cannot be taken as correct solutions, as this example will show:
1. N-B4 PxNch; 2. K-N4 P-B5; 3. K-R4 P-B6; 4. B-N4 P-B7; 5. P-R3 P-B8(N)!! 6. P-B8(P) the idea of the composer is not to promote the Pawn to any other piece because of N-K7 and the mate cannot be stopped. Of course, the modern rules call for promotions after the Pawn reaches the eighth rank, but in Problems or in End Games the more difficult the composer can make them the more credit they get for their compositions.
In this case after the Pawn reaches the eighth rank, White is stalemated. If White plays 5. P-B8(Q) QxQ; 6. P-R3 Q-K3! and after 7. PxQ P-B8(Q;) Black wins.
