Perhaps the greatest tribute of all is the fact that players from every country are becoming disciples of the Russian school of chess. The new American stars, Evans, Bisguier, Lombardy, and the Byrne brothers, not to mention Bobby Fischer, are all exponents of Tchigorin, whether they know it or not.
Mikhail Tchigorin, the man who never quite made it when he was alive, is now the father of modern chess.
The present champion of the world is Vasily Smyslov. The last champion is Mikhail Botvinnik. Both are from the USSR. However it is not quite to the point to say that a certain Russian is the world's champion. The truth is that the USSR itself is champion of the world of chess.
