1972 promises to be an eventful year for chess; and a brief survey of the chess calendar may be of interest to devotees of the game.
Most spectacular, of course, will the the world title match between Boris Spassky of the U.S.S.R., and Bobby Fischer of United States. Apart from being the climax of three-year cycle of elimination events, it is the first time in post war years that a non-Russian has competed. Regardless of Fischer's ultimate success or failure, he has certainly sparked an unprecedented interest in the game—not only among leading players, but in the news media and among the public in general.
Date for this match will probably be in the late spring at a place not yet decided. However, Chess Federation President Phil Haley has advised that Montreal has made a strong bid for the match, but final selection will of course be made by the world chess organization at Amsterdam.…
