Chess Sat, Dec 25, 1971 – 13 · The Bangor Daily News (Bangor, Maine) · Newspapers.comInternational events have been exciting too, even if vicariously, for 1971 has been the Year of Fischer. Bobby has held himself aloof from major events for several years, but now he's back, to the joy of Americans and the consternation of Russians, who see in him a serious threat to their long dominion of the World's Championship.
Probably everyone knows by now of Bobby's awesome performances, how he ran far ahead of the field in the Interzonal Tournament and then trounced his opponents in the Candidates' Matches: Taimanov (6-0), Larsen (6-0) and Petrosian (6½-2½). These victories, especially the shutouts, are unprecedented in the history of chess.
Fischer is presently preparing himself to meet Champion Boris Spassky for the title. The match will begin in May or June at a still undetermined site, but certainly in a neutral country.
