Tigran Petrosian, USSR grandmaster, took over the lead in the Interzonal tourney at Portoroz, Yugoslavia, when his compatriot Mikhail Tal scored too many draws to hold it. Fridrik Olafsson, Iceland, may share the lead if he wins his adjourned game with O. Neikirch, Bulgaria. Olafsson had earlier accounted for S. Gligoric, Yugoslavia.
Canada's star, Geza Fuster, is shining dimly in this galaxy of grandmasters with two draws out of seven games played, one of which was with Oscar Panno, Argentina. He played well against Bobby Fischer in the second round, winning a pawn but finally blundered away a piece.
15-year-old Fischer, U.S.A. champion, is naturally the center of interest, and has been reported as greatly bothered by the attentions of public and press, and even asked protection of authorities. Which recalls an incident in the 1956 Canadian Open here when a similar situation developed. With his approval he was lifted from the main floor of the 'general assembly' to the 'summit' on the platform with half a dozen leading players. One session in this chilly isolation convinced him he was out of his element and he asked to be moved back to the floor.
