Chess 27 Sep 1958, Sat Middlesex County Times and West Middlesex Gazette (Ealing, London, England) Newspapers.comThe 1958 Inter-Zonal Tournament probably produced the most surprising results so far, the arrival of a new chess genius in Bobby Fischer, the 15-year old American Champion, and the eclipse of Bronstein being only two of the many surprises the tournament produced.
The first six players—Tal (USSR) 13½;
Gligoric (Yugoslavia) 13;
Benko (Stateless) and Petrosian (USSR) 12½;
Fischer (USA) and Olafsson (Iceland) 12—join Smyslov and Keres in the Candidates Tournament next year to decide on the challenger to meet Botvinnik for the World Championship. In a very close fight five other players tied for 7th place with 11½ pts, with Bronstein nowhere.
