Bobby Fischer has been assiduously training for his match with world champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union, which is set to start in Reykjavik. Iceland on Sunday, July 2.
For some time Fischer has been in a resort in Sullivan County, N.Y., preparing both mentally and physically for the match, in which he is favored to bring the title to the U.S.
Last Monday Fischer made a surprise visit to California. He competed in a tennis tournament in La Costa, in a group of 16 celebrities from every branch of sport.
Fischer plays an aggressive game of tennis, but lacks the finesse and accuracy that have brought him so far in chess. He was an also ran in the tournament, which was won by Hank Greenberg, former slugger for the Detroit Tigers, and Bob Boyd, basketball coach of USC.
