Following is the score of a game won by the world champion, Dr. Euwe, from Paul Keres of Estonia at Zandvoort, where Reuben Fine of New York finished first, a full point ahead of the famous Amsterdam schoolmaster.
Reuben Fine vs Max Euwe
Zandvoort (1936), Zandvoort NED, rd 5, Jul-23
Slav Defense: General (D10) 1/2-1/2
WORLD CHAMPION DRAWS WITH FINE
Cautious play on the part of Reuben Fine, which eventually led into a rook and pawn ending, enabled the young New Yorker to halve the point in his personal encounter with Dr. Max Euwe of Amsterdam, world champion, at Zandevoort, where the American eventually captured the chief prize. The game lasted forty-six moves and, to a certain extent, was the turning point in that memorable congress.
The score:
Paul Keres vs Max Euwe
Zandvoort (1936), Zandvoort NED, rd 2, Jul-19
French Defense: Advance Variation. Nimzowitsch System (C02) 0-1
From the recent Bad Nauheim Tournament.
Carl Ahues vs Alexander Alekhine
Bad Nauheim (1936), Bad Nauheim GER, rd 4, May-20
Queen's Gambit Accepted: Alekhine Defense (D22) 0-1
This game was considered the most brilliant played in the recent Dresden tournament, won by Dr. Alekhine. Engels, a young German, was the sensation of the tournament, defeating Alekhine, Maroczy and Keres, and finishing second, a half-point behind the former world's champion.
Karl Helling vs Ludwig Engels
Dresden (1936), Dresden GER, rd 7, Jun-12
Indian Game: General (A45) 0-1
Capablanca's victory at Moscow was rendered doubly sweet for him since it also included a personal defeat of the veteran Lasker. In a complicated Sicilian mid-game, Capablanca developed a gradual pull that resulted in a win; though prolonged and difficult ending.
Emanuel Lasker vs Jose Raul Capablanca
Moscow (1936), Moscow URS, rd 15, Jun-03
Sicilian Defense: Classical Variation (B58) 0-1
