Fischer Wins Again, Creates Precedent
In the second round of the U.S. Chess Championship Tournament just completed, two International Grand Masters met and played a Sicilian Defense that proved highly instructive.
Bill Lombardy, 23, opened on the White Side and the four time champion, 17-year-old Robert Fischer defended the Black.
Fischer crowned his four tier parlay without losing a game, establishing another precedent to add to the series which mark nearly every tournament in which he appears.
Lombardy led off with 1. P-K4 and Fischer replied with P-QB4, the Sicilian. Whether it leads to an open fighting game or a passive defense depends on the point of view.
White is somewhat circumscribed in the choice of good moves which makes the Sicilian a good game for beginners to master as a reply to 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. f3 Nc6 6. c4 e6 7. Nc3 Be7 8. Be3 O-O
Lombardy on the White side does not have recourse to castling during the 43 move game, emphasizing the ancient instruction to castle if you will or if you must; never just because you can.
