L.A. Times Problem No. 54 by Sam Loyd. Like most of his compositions, the key will impress upon itself upon your memory. Loyd figured the average 3-er about six times as difficult as the average 2-er, but not his 2-er. White mates in two.
FEN 3K4/5N2/2B2p2/3R4/4kP2/4P3/1B1q4/5Q2 w - - 0 1
Key: B-B/Bc1. The black bishop should have been white, as verified in the code underneath.
The passing of Dr. Berthold Lasker of Berlin, older brother of the famous Dr. Emanuel Lasker, former world's champion, is reported in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. He was 67 years of age. He taught his younger brother the game, which he did not follow professionally, his life being devoted to medicine. But he engaged in a few competition, his greatest success being at Berlin in 1890 when he divided first and second prizes with his famous brother.
