The fever in Buenos Aires during Bobby Fischer's world championship eliminator against Petrosian, was, paradoxically, a case of enthusiasm for a brand of chess which in many countries now attracts only a minority of active players. The world title qualifiers were times at the standard international rate where each opponent has two and a half hours on his clock to make 40 moves. Tournaments held on this basis may take several weeks to complete and, because of spiraling costs, they are less and less practical for the ordinary player outside the small circuit of European professionals.
