RIVALS AT MOSCOW IN CLOSE CONTEST
M. Botvinnik, the Soviet chess champion, and runner-up to Jose R. Capablanca in the recent tournament at Moscow, had his last chance when he met the Cuban in their return match in the second half of that contest. Had he won it, the Russian would have been in a better position to challenge his rival for first place. It turned out to be a draw, but only after some ingenious tactics had been indulged in on both sides. It was a real test to which these famous experts are put.
Loewenfischer of Leningrad made an excellent showing in his second meeting with Capablanca and drew a game which was greatly to his credit. The former world champion's game with Lilienthal of Hungary was a stereotyped variation of the Ruy Lopez.
