Hartston, aged 24, a post-graduate mathematics student at Jesus College, Cambridge, defeated international master Enver Bukic, of Yugoslavia, in the seventh round, and moved into second place half a point behind the tournament leader, Rukavina, also of Yugoslavia. Hartston has so far beaten Bukic, international master Victor Ciocaltea, of Rumania, and Susok, of the Lebanon, with draws in his other four games.
He now has good chances to finish in the top two places, and so become the first Englishman in 20 years to reach the interzonal stage of the world title contest. Chess, page 21
