The long-awaited championship match between Boris Spassky of the U.S.S.R. and Bobby Fischer of the U.S.has been canceled by the World Chess Federation according to news reports. The match, scheduled to begin in June in Yugoslavia was canceled because of the dispute over the financial terms by Fischer. Fischer had sought a larger share in the proceeds.
With Belgrade withdrawing its bid to host the match, there still remains the possibility of scheduling the entire match in Reykjavik, Iceland, where only the second half was to be played. If the World Chess Federation rules that Fischer has lost the opportunity to challenge World Champion Spassky, then Tigran Petrosian, of the U.S.S.R. whom Fischer recently defeated in Argentina, will become the new challenger. Speaking of Fischer, here is a brief game of his against Walter Shipman in a recent tournament.
