LOVE?!
by Clif Sherwood
They were sitting in a dimly lit corner of the Ritzy Hotel lobby, far from the usual entrance or exit traffic. Faint streams of moonlit rays barely penetrated a near-by window. Almost overhead a canary warbled tremulous phrases of melodious harmony. Otherwise they were quite alone. At last he had the long wished-for chance to tell her what was pressing on his mind. She was beautiful, fascinating, supreme. She had been sweet to him while he entertained her lavishly at theaters, dances and dinners. He spoke with an ardor that could not be misunderstood: “Dearest, I have been wishing for weeks to tell you of the impulsive urge that stirs my yearning heart. (Blah, blah). Nothing else can replace you in my very soul. (More blah.) Dearest one, uh . . . . (rapidly) well, well, if there isn't my old enemy Bill Jones, up there on the mezzanine at the chess table. I must go up and get even with him for a couple of tricky combinations he pulled on me yesterday. So long, dear, I'll call you tomorrow.”
He clearly thought being rude and objectification was an admirable quality, or even humor.
Sherwood's story implies as well, the lady friend was left to hail a taxi to make her own way home, which for 1932 would be considered out of custom and UN-gentlemanly.
