Chess Notebook By Lyman Burgess
Miss Lisa Lane, Philadelphia, won the United States women's chess championship. Mrs. Gisela K. Gresser, defending champion, was second and Miss M. M. Karff, a former champion, was third. Miss Lane appeared in the New England amateur championship tournament in Boston last Spring.
There is an amusing article in the Dec. 5 Chess Life on Henry James and chess. In it Robert L. Gale seeks to prove that although the famous novelist was fond of using chess imagery he actually knew next to nothing about the game. Slightly reminiscent of B. H. Woods dissection of Poe but with less venom.
The Rosenwald and U.S championship tournament started Dec. 18. At this writing it is not known whether Reshevsky and Fischer will compete. Ten sure starters are Arthur Bisguier, James Sherwin, Sidney Bernstein, Herbert Seidman, Arnold Denker, Pal Benko, Edmar Mednis, Raymond Weinstein, Robert Byrne and Robin Ault.
Missing are Larry Evans, Donald Byrne and William Lombardy. Boston chess players will get a look at Lombardy Feb. 22, he is scheduled to give a simultaneous exhibition at the M.S.C.A.'s annual meeting.
Chess Review's editorial for December is called “Rules and Ethics”. Inspired by an incident in the New York state tournament the Review calls for a revision of rule 20, section III. A player in a clearly won position failed to stop his clock, which had six minutes to go, after making his move. His opponent, faced with a lost point, noticed the omission, according to Chess Review, and “bided his time until the flag fell.”
A spectator who wanted to warn the forgetful player was shushed and the referee stood helplessly shackled by the ambiguous rule cited above.
