Editor Lehigh Valley and City Tourney The Lehigh Valley and City Chess thamplonships which the Y. M. C. A. iponsor each year by running an tlimlnation tournament Is progressing to a point where Interest runs high. In the first Tound of this tournament numerous upsets were record-id, some games were decidedly close, others were of short duration. One of the games lasted six hours and went to 78 moves.
This game was between A. Herrmann and W. H. Steeled, the latter winning in a complicated Rook and Pawn ending. First round results are as follows: C. Troxell, 1, E. Shollenberger. 0; W. Snyder, 1, R. East Indian chess expert and British champion for the last two years has been dethroned, according to reports from the other side. Playing at the annual songress of the British Chess Federation at Worcester, Sultan Khan, although victorious in their personal encounter, lost the title to F. D. Yates of London, a former holder of it. Vates finished with a score of 8-3, while Sultan Khan and W. Winter of London scored 7' 4 -3 '4 each. Miss Vera Menchlk. world's woman champion, won first prize in the major open tournament with a score of 9-2. All the other competitors were males.

Alekhine Still Undefeated Dr. Alexander Alekhine of France, In the fourteenth round scored still another victory, his eleventh, and holds a five-point lead in the inter national chess masters tournament at the Hotel Teplice. Dr. Alekhine conducted the wn e forces in a queen's pawn open I against G. Stoltz of Sweden. Lie champion found no difficulty in es tablishing a superiority in position ind forced the resignation of his op- oonent after thirty-seven moves. Asztalc: Yugoslavia, he adopted the queen's pawn opening, but met with stout re jistance. The game was stubbornly contested throughout two sessions and then adjourned in an even position alter mty-seven moves. After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

The photograph of Bobby Fischer (above) from the March 02, 1956 The Tampa Times was discovered by Sharon Mooney (Bobby Fischer Newspaper Archive editor) on February 01, 2018 while gathering research materials for this ongoing newspaper archive project. Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
