A. iponsor each year by running an tlimlnation tournament Is progressing to a point where Interest runs high. In the first Tound of this tournament numerous upsets were record-id, some games were decidedly close, others were of short duration. One of the games lasted six hours and went to 78 moves.

East Indian chess expert and British champion for the last two years has been dethroned, according to reports from the other side. Playing at the annual songress of the British Chess Federation at Worcester, Sultan Khan, although victorious in their personal encounter, lost the title to F. D. Yates of London, a former holder of it. Vates finished with a score of 8-3, while Sultan Khan and W. Winter of London scored 7' 4 -3 '4 each. Miss Vera Menchlk. world's woman champion, won first prize in the major open tournament with a score of 9-2. All the other competitors were males.

Dr. Alekhine conducted the wn e forces in a queen's pawn open I against G. Stoltz of Sweden.
