CHESS At the annual meeting of the Mercantile Library Chess Association held Saturday, September 17, the following officers and directors were elected: President, S. T. Sharp; vice president, R. S. Goerlich; secretary, D. G. Weiner; treasurer, J. Levin. Directors W. J. Clay, W. D. Witt, I. Ash, S. Drasin and A. Regen. The annual Mercantile Library Chess Club championship tournament will commence October 1, The annual championship tournament of the Marshall Chess Club will start about the middle of October. Among those who have signified their intention to take part are: Reuben Fine, A. T. Dunst, A. E. Santasiere, Fred Reinfeld, Irving Cherney, A. C. Cass, H. R. Bigelow, W. Frere and A. C. Simonson. Dr. Max Euwe. of Amsterdam, and Salo Flohr. of Prague, two of the leading European experts of today, are contesting a match of 16 games. The first eight games have been finished, with the result of six draws Rnd a victory for each player. The game published this week was the game won by Euwe in the tournament just mentioned.

To which I replied: “Really? I think he [Bob Fischer] stood up to the broken system of corruption and raised awareness! After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

The photograph of Bobby Fischer (above) from the March 02, 1956 The Tampa Times was discovered by Sharon Mooney (Bobby Fischer Newspaper Archive editor) on February 01, 2018 while gathering research materials for this ongoing newspaper archive project. Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
