MILLER, Jr. SALO FLOHR, youthful chess grandmaster from Czechoslovakia, has been designated by the International Chess Federation as the official challenger for the world crown immediately after Dr. Max Euwe. title holder since early 1936, and Dr. Alexander Alekhin, who lost the crown to Euwe, play a return match this Winter. Many columnists are singing praises of Capablanea's ability and contend he i' the logical challenger of the EuweAlekhin victor In 1921 Jose Capahlanca, (tuba n. wrested the world championship from Emanuel Lasker, only to lose in 1927 to the Russian. Alekhin. Salo Flohr has made no personal bid for the title, but in international masters' tournaments in recent years he invariably has finished among the topnotchers, often tieing for major honors.
From an unofficial source comes the statement that the grandmasters' tournamen.. to be played at Semmering at the Panhans Hotel to decide the world challenger, has been called o!T. No reasons are given. But behind the scenes your columnist sur mises that the International Chess Federation has cornered the battle between Euwe and Alekhin with the right to name the challenger, so a conclave cf masters at Semmering would be “love's labor lost." At the present rate chess titles soon will be placed on the block annually and auctioned of! to the highest bidder. Chess Lecture Tonight.
'J^'HE first of a series of three instructional lectures for beginners and tyros will be given this evening at 8 o'clock at the Parkside Hotel, 1336 ! I street northwest, bv the chess editor of The Washington Star, i Prof. Miller will speak on “What i Every Eeglnner Should Know,” an elementary lecture for those who would learn the rudiments of chess play the proper way. Chess cannot be learned from books alone. In fact, for a beginner to gain ! a working knowledge of chess prtni ciples from any book is a mast diffl| cult task, as the average text is ob1 acure and confusing. Tonight's lecture will be easily understood by any layman and will clarify even an amateur on the technique of moving the chessmen.
The public is welcome. Individual lectures are 50 cents, and $1 for the series of three. All monies to be used in developing social chess In the District. The Metropolitan Chess Association ; holds its August assembly Thursday, | 8 p.m., Parkside Hotel. All tournament committees will make reports at this conference relative to the Pall activity program..
