By PAUL J. MILLER, Jr. PAUL MORPHY CHESS CLUB, formerly the War Department C. C., in the semi-final round of the team tournament of the Metropolitan Chess Association for the District championship, played last evening at the Parkside Hotel, overwhelmed the Agriculture Chess Club, 4,/a-I/i. to total 21 game points out of a possible 25, thus winning the team title for the second consecutive time.
Entering a week late in the team tourney, the Social Chess Divan and Interhlgh Chess Association units have one remaining round to play and the most successive interclub fray in recent years will have become history. Irrespective of whether the divan whitewashes the school players, such a victory will not mar the pre-eminent standing of the Morphyites, for the latter have a lead that cannot be tied, much less excelled. But the alibi lads are saying that 17 the Ladies’ Chess Club had not upset the divan players last night, when Mrs. E. R. Shepard and Mrs. H. E. Kittredge vanquished Carl and Anton Hesse at boards Nos. 1 and 2, and IF in the final round this next Friday the divan garners a unanimous win from the school players, well—the Social Chess Divan would have excelled the Paul Morphy Club by exactly half a point—that is.
IP the international point system for team tourneys had been the basis for deciding the merit of the six teams entered in the fray. But that is the story of what might have been—IF??? Chairman Alexander Sturges announced that the championship would be awarded on the basis of team matches won. The Morphyltes never lost a single quintet match, but swept triumphantly over all opposition. Unquestionably much credit for their splendid performance and strong entry should be attributed to the tireless efforts of President Earle Kunkle and Chess Director Max Kessler. Shortly the victors will be presented with the M. C. A. trophy, to hold for one year, and all players who completed their match schedules will receive a copy of the official Laws ol Chess as published by the British Chess Federation.
