Your Move Notes About the Mount Vernon Chess and Checker Club ' Last'week at the weekly get-together of the members of the Mount Vernon Chess and Checker Club which is sponsored by the Recreation Commission there were more than 20 members present Two new chess players joined the club last Thursday.
All present participated in their favorite game and a business meeting was held later in the evening The ladder tournament which is being conducted in the club is still proving to be very popular and numerous players advanced over their standing of the previous week The chess team which is a member of the county chess league will resume play after a week’s layoff due to a bye This riday they will meet the Greenwich YMCA team at Greenwich Conn The personnel of the team will be announced at the meeting tomorrow In the first match between these two teams the local team was the winner when it overwhelmed the Connecticut team by a 5 to score the match being played here in the clubrooms The local men are hopeful of winning the riday match as it will put them in a tie for first place in the league standing.
At-the meeting last week the officers decided to hold a tournament for the members of the club to start tomorrow The tournament is the first annual intramural chess play and is open to ail other players in Mount Vernon who wish to join The players will be divided into two groups and prizes will be given to the first three players in each group There also will be a special prize for the lucky woman player who is high at the close of the tournament This will give all a good chance to display their skill There will be an entrance fee of 25 cents charged which will be used towards purchasing prizes riay will begin tomorrow at which time the draw of play will be made for the first round Everybody should make an effort to attend this meeting in order to enter the tournament at the start but the tournament entry will be left open until Thursday January 1 for the benefit of those who cannot be present tomorrow night.
The rules of play will be distributed tomorrow and any controversies which may arise will be settled by the Special Committee of Affairs Every member’s support is necessary to put across the tournament and whether you win or lose the tournament is bound to be of interest or players who are not members of the club and who would like to join the meetings are held every Thursday evening at 8 o’clock in the clubrooms at The Campbell House 36 South irst Avenue.
