BY PAUL J. MILLER, Jr. SEVERAL conferences of the committee chairmen of the various tournaments of the Metropolitan Chess Association are booked this week at Parkside Hotel, the most important being the discussion relative to the Winter team tourney, in which possibly a dozen quintets from all sections of the city will be entered. Either Alexander Sturgea or Dr. George Hervey of the Agricultural Chess Club will head the official Team Tournament Committee.
Carl Hem Meets All Comers, jyjATCHING his skill in simultaneous play against members of the Washington Social Chess Divan Wednesday night at 8 o'clock, Carl Hesse, one of the strongest class A stars in District chessdom, will give the first open individual exhibition to be fostered by the divan since it moved into its new quarters at the Parkside Hotel, 1336 I street northwest. Hesse for years has engaged the school lads in simultaneous play and enjoys encouraging youngsters to realize the maximum of delight to be derived from the royal game. In the sundry annual frays for the title of District champion, Hesse invariably has made a creditable showing. The exhibition Wednesday evening is public and those who wish to challenge Hesse's strength are welcome to reach for the brass ring. To avoid delay in obtaining playing equipment visitors are requested to fetch their own chessmen, as public exhibitions ordinarily tax the facilities of even the divan, the largest chess "club" in the District.
Simon Naidei, tournament director, is in rharge of reservations. | The first player to score a win against Hesse will receive a gratis membership to the Social Chess Divan for one month. Rule* Are Rules, But— JSRAEL, HOROWITZ, editor of Chess Review, won the 1936 crown of the American Chess Federation at the Philadelphia toumaihent. This Summer the national battle has shifted to Chicago, scheduled play to commence on August 24. According to the by-laws of the federation, players must compete In the seeded sections to reach the final.
But Horowitz will be busy representing Uncle Sam at Stockholm in the international team tournament and perforce shall be unable to start In the initial sectional games of the A. C. F. So the suggestion is that Champion Horowitz should be given the privilege of competing in the final rounds without having to wade through the qualifying rounds. A national master should not be placed on the same parity with chess adventurers.
Established ability merits the courtesy of entering any tournament, without preliminary trials of strength.
