BY PAUL J. MILLER, JP.. ARL HESSE stars tonight In a simultaneous exhibition of his skill as one of the outstanding class A players In the District. The exhibition opens at Parkside Hotel, 8 o’clock, and the public is welcome, says Simon Naidel, tournament director of the Washington Social Chess Divan. Norval Wigginton, assistant chess director and treasurer of the divan, sounds the tocsin for members of the only exclusive 'Social Chess Lounge’’ to gather and challenge the strength of Hesse.
To the first player defeating Hesse in the “stmul” will be given a gratis membership for one month in the Social Chess Divan. The entertainment this evening Is the first of several features that will characterize the Summer activity at the lounge, 1336 I street northwest. Skittle chess, rapid transit chess and several exhibits will follow in rapid succession. Britishers Select Team. JULY 31 is the opening date for the international team tournament of the Federation Internationale des Echecs at Stockholm.
The British delegation to the international tourney is comprised of William Winter, British champion; C. H. Ou. Alexander, H. Golombek, P. S. Milner-Barry and Sir George A. Thomas. But the British quintet falls short of the estimated strength of the United States five, headed by Retired Champion Frank J. Marshall, ably supported by Isaac Kashdan, champion of the Manhattan Chess Club of New York City and champion of the Empire state; Israel Horowitz, American Chess Federation champion; Samuel Reshevsky, United States champion, and Reuben Fine, erstwhile champion of the Western Chess Association. The annual congress of the British Chess Federation has been finished at Blackpool. It is the thirtieth anniversary of the B. C. F. as organized today. Local interhigh players will clash within a fortnight in a rapid transit tourney at Parkside Hotel. Meantime the class A tournament of the Paul Morphy Chess Club is tied up between V. L. Eaton, Simon Naldei, Max Kessler and J. Neufeld. It seems that the first three players are hedging their games, which perhaps means another robin of play. At the glorious age of 84. Samuel Tucker, member of the Social Chess Divan and no doubt the oldest living exponent of chess in the District, has submitted his resignation as an actfva member of the divan because physical Infirmities require that he stay at home and avoid undue physical exercise. Our regrets to Tucker, and ha wishes the divan long life and prosperity which we would return to him in boomerang fashion.
