CHESS Games — Problems By Paul L Cromelin MARSHALL BEATS 26 rank J Marshall found unusual strength pitted against him last St turday at the Official Opening of Uie new Mount Vernon Chess Club and was forced to yield four draws and a full point out of 25 before the evening was over George M Sharrard of White Plains president of the Westchester County Chess League was the winner John W Barnhart and E S Jackson Jr of Bronxville and rank H oley and Max Hacker of Mount Vernon scored the draws rank Janet made the dedicatory talk drawing from the history of chess the happy thought that the Mount Vernon C C starts its existence at the beginning of a new wave of interest in the game This he proved with parallels drawn from past periods of unusual interest to chess play-e -s Herman Helms Editor of the American Chess Bulletin spoke briefly on organized activity predicting success for the club on the basis of the groundwork already done in organization.
The simultaneous exhibition began about 9:45 P M and before one the next morning the final holdout had been eliminated One of the early surprises was caused by Mrs Ben W McCready who first slowed Marshall up in his speedy march around the rectangle or quite a while our Raphael gave the champion reason for lengthy pauses at her position but finally succumbed to the experience of her opponent Marshall played 1 P-K4 on all the boards' and then made the first rapid round with 2 P-Q4 which produced all sorts of variations in the Danish Center and Counter Gambits with a few rench and Sicilians thrown in for good measure But at board 10 sat E S Jackson Jr and there Marshall paused a moment shook hands and played 2 Kt-KB3! Jackson later drew and left no doubt in the minds of many spectators that the pressure he exerted on Marshall materially helped Sharrard at the next table to win John Hannan Chess Enthusiast arrived early from Newburgh! Later on in the evening he was awarded first prize in the Problem Contest Second prize went to Dr H M Berliner of the Bronx and Third Prize to R S Greenwald of New Rochelle.
Over 100 spectators watched the evening’s play and all agreed that it was a grand night of chess Since Saturday night eight members have been added to SPLIT BOARD DEMANDS LYNN Cites Need of Republican On Estimate Body The need of a non-partisan Board of Estimate and Contract - was stressed last night by John Lynn Republican candidate for Comptroller in a speech at the rally of the Young Men’s Republican Club in irst Street It was the first meeting ’and rally this season and the Young Women’s Club joined in the program Mr Lynn was one of a dozen speakers He promised if elected to give his full time to discharge the duties of Comptroller Benjamin I Tunick attorney the roster of the club and several more are expeetd to join as a further result.

The interest in this miniature (any problem wth a total force of seven or fewer pieces is called a miniature) is created by the fact that the Key Move sacrifices a choice of two of White’s three attackers The beauty of the Two-Mover is in the crushing blow No 1 is a splendid example of this Advance comments on No 2 indicate that it was too easy We agree! Next week we’ll tell you about the niceties of beautiful problem composition illustrated in it They Key Move in Problem No 1 is 1 B-Q5 Solutions were received from A J Bastine J Casagrande A C Eckert Mrs Emily C Hubbell Los Angeles Cal (Glad you find Janet interesting There’s a flaw in 1 Q-QR3! 'til the world understands why Robert J. Fischer criticised the U.S./British and Russian military industry imperial alliance and their own Israeli Apartheid. Sarah Wilkinson explains:

Bobby Fischer, First Amendment, Freedom of Speech
What a sad story Fischer was,” typed a racist, pro-imperialist colonial troll who supports mega-corporation entities over human rights, police state policies & white supremacy.
To which I replied: “Really? I think he [Bob Fischer] stood up to the broken system of corruption and raised awareness! Whether on the Palestinian/Israel-British-U.S. Imperial Apartheid scam, the Bush wars of ‘7 countries in 5 years,’ illegally, unconstitutionally which constituted mass xenocide or his run in with police brutality in Pasadena, California-- right here in the U.S., police run rampant over the Constitution of the U.S., on oath they swore to uphold, but when Americans don't know the law, and the cops either don't know or worse, “don't care” -- then I think that's pretty darn “sad”. I think Mr. Fischer held out and fought the good fight, steadfast til the day he died, and may he Rest In Peace.

After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

The photograph of Bobby Fischer (above) from the March 02, 1956 The Tampa Times was discovered by Sharon Mooney (Bobby Fischer Newspaper Archive editor) on February 01, 2018 while gathering research materials for this ongoing newspaper archive project. Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
