BY PAUL J. MILLER, Jr. CHAIRMAN ALEXANDER STURGES of the District Chess Team Tournament Committee of the Metropolitan Chess Association extends a personal invitation to every club and chess group in the District desirous of competing for the team championship of the District to have official representatives present at the meeting of the tournament committee this Wednesday, 8 p.m., Parkside Hotel, 1336 Eye street northwest. At the last meeting the M. C. A. president and Chairman S targes were in agreement that any chess group could enter as >-many five-man teams as It ehose, but each team would be limited to no more than two class A players. It seems that the Paul Morphy Chess Club and other units favor taking the lid off and throwing the tournament open to the very best quintets any chess group may be able to muster and thus make the tourney a knock-down and drag-out fray, the devil take the hindmost. It is altogether fitting that such a team tourney should be conducted and that it be a survival of the fittest. But as usual the Metropolitan Chess Association in its customary democratic caucus wishes the sentiments of all units before laying down any hard and fast rules.
Therefore it is most important that your chess group or club have one or more spokesmen on hand Wednesday to present the attitude of your personal unit The majority sentiment will govern no single chib will dominate the method of running the District team championship battle, avers Chairman Sturges. According to Sturges each team entry will be assessed $5 for official play during the course of the tourney, and each team so assessed will provide its own equipment, but the Social Chess Lounge will provide playing accommodations in conjunction with the Metropolitan Chess Association. Players who are shy of chessmen and board may utilize the - lounge’s game facilities by paying the individual charge of 25 cents, In addition to the team entry fee. The president of the Metropolitan Chess Association says that every player who completes his or her team schedule shall receive a copy of the official laws of chess as translated from the French into English and published by the British Chess Federation, under the auspices of the International Chess Federation. Top players probably shall receive special awards, and of course the victorious team shall gain custody for the year of the District team trophy, originally won by the War Department Chess Club last year, under the captaincy of Earle Kunkle, current leader of the Paul Morphy C. C. Some 20 chess groups exist in the District, and with the exception of one chess and bridge club, all are pulling together under the M. C. A. banner.
Would that the team tourney could obtain the 100 per cent co-operation and indorsement of all factions! Organized chess in the District Is prospering. But a single club can hamstring any worthwhile endeavor. Now Is the time for petty grievances to be forgotten, the war hatchet buried and the warm hand of friendship is extended herewith to every individual, group and club by the officers of the Metropolitan Chess Association: Attend the Wednesday meeting if you are interested in.
