By PAUL J. MILLER, Jr. RECEIVING Its baptism in tournament play during the District quintet battle for the Y. M. C. A. Trophy, the Government Printing Office, somewhat cocky over its fair showing in the melee, will engage the Paul Morphy Chess Club Thursday, 8 p.m„ at the latter’s location, at 1508 Fourteenth street N.W. It is a foregone conclusion that the nascent G. P. O. club stands little chance of even obtaining a single win a**J- tia Qauxa*- \ AAA against any of the playing personnel of the District team champions. Marcel Propper says that several years ago the G. P. O. had a club of approximately 70 members, but lax administration of District chess activities led to the disruption of the unit.
The present group of players, according to Propper, will play not only interclub matches, but most of Its members will affiliate with the Washington Social Chess Divan in order to encourage the organized social chess program. All G. P. O. employes are invited to visit the Social Chess Lounge, Parkside Hotel, this evening at 8 o’clock and utilize the game facilities at their pleasure.
Divan Copies Jacob’s Ladder. JT SEEMS according to the Good Book that Jacob's ladder had no end and Winfred Horn, acting in charge of the general tournament of the Divan, is adding new entrants to the odd and even sections weekly, something of a Jacob's tournament chess ladder. ' The tourney schedule calls for a completion of all games by mid-December. Late or new entries merely have to meet all the contestants in their particular section by that date. Through tournament play the beginner develops ability and skill and therefore should prefer this type of chess.
Popular openings for the beginner to learn are the Ruy Lopez, King’s Pawn, King’s Gambit, Sicilian Defence, Giuoco Piano, Philidor Defense, Scotch, and for the first year he should avoid the Queen’s Pawn opening and its complexities. VINCENT SAPORITO invites the following Divan players to be on hand tonight for receipt of November membership cards: Carl Hesse, L. W. Perris, E. E. Williams, Raymond W. Lewis, J. M. Sheffington, John Pender, Leroy Werner, Walter Jacobs, Heine Johann sen. Dale Pullen, Charles W. Walkup, Leonard Minkoff, John Dubin, Morris Appelbaum, A. B. C. Graves, I. J. Curran, E. Spaulding, Robert Mostler, J. H. Abercrombie and P. L. Richards. Several years ago the chess column of the Memphis Commercial Appeal was edited by a woman. The Mid-West Chess News, that Is to be published henceforth at St. Louis, will have Pauline H. Papp as problem editor.
Miss Papp resides at Medina, Ohio, and is the first of her sex to take such a lively interest in problem editing..
