THE INCOMPLETE BLOCK TWO-MOVER No. 35 By J. Paul Taylor ... '-a wtvm TtM am. si ?rm fPB -& T7A ft VA A ; M '3il Mate in two moves. Th next study, by J. Paul Taylor has a key-move ot much the same char-cier, though the movin piece mppeara from ita position, as shown in the diagram, to have some probable office m protectinc the bishop's pawn on its being advanced two squares. This itiea can soon be abandoned as really nothinc ad-vantaneous can result from such a move. Therefore, the rook i at the solver's disposal to counteract the only defense for which a mate is not prepared, namely, 1 . . Kt-Q5, which prevents QxP at B3. It will not take lone to run over Black's other possible moves and en-vlsace the correct mate. The question it. how the rook: enn be brought effectively into play to meet the unprovided-for Kt-C'5- It has four moves and the reader mu't be given credit for seeing that three of these are absolutelT futile. The fourth, R-Kl. does not look very hopeful, out its strategic tendency Is revealed on srfing the triple effect the move of the Black kntchr going to G5 has upon the position: firstly. It allows the king's bishop in command OB4; secondly, if temporarily, tt clears the king file to enable the rook to support the pawn when giving mate. Thus the problem is solved.
