ADAMS THE NEW ENGLAND CHAMPION Boston City Club Flan Host to New England Chess Enthusiasts Sept. 4-7 Labor Day week-end brought out the largest field of entries ever to participate for the New England chess championship title at the Boston City Club.
The best players from the various chess centers ol the New England Slates gathered together for a rather strenuous contest. Inasmuch as the entry list was unusually large, 17 in ail, the tournament was divided into four preliminary groups and Ihen the finals divided into the championship, the expert (those who were in second place in the preliminary contests) and the consolation section. This necessltaled. in many instances, three games a day. But the tournament itself, under the excellent direction of Norman E. Ward, president of the Massachusetts Stale Chess Association: George St urn is. president of the United States Chess Federation, and W. M. P. Mitchell, was played with such precision and dispatch that all games were completed according to schedule, so that a full attendance was possible at the final celebration dinner served at the Boston City Club on Labor Day evening.
